The walk across the green, back to my house was over far too quickly for my liking; I wasn’t ready for this evening to be over… just yet.

“I had fun tonight,” I say, pulling my coat tighter around me. If I had thought it was cold earlier, the temperature must have dropped, at least, ten degrees in the last few hours.

“Me too,” Luke agrees. He hesitates before adding, “Can I tell you something?”

“Of course.”

“I’m not ready for this to end just yet,” he admits. “I mean-”

“I know what you mean,” I agree. I shiver and Luke immediately removes his coat and drapes it around my shoulders. I sigh, instantly enveloped in his warmth. “Aren’t you cold, now?” I ask.

“A bit but I can put the heat on when I’m in the car; I thaw out pretty quickly,” he assures me. “Anyway, I’d hate for you to freeze to death on our first date.”

I hesitate for a moment before finally looking at him. “So, this is a date then?”

“If that’s okay with you?” he says, meeting my gaze expectantly.

I nod, unable to keep my smile at bay. “That’s more than okay with me.”

“Good; I’m glad we’re on the same page.”

These words turn my blood to ice, knowing we’re not quite on the same page yet; he deserves to know the whole truth. “Actually, there’s something you should know,” I begin and, as I force myself to look at him, I see the uncertainty in his eyes.

“What is it?”

“I’m seeing Mike tomorrow,” I confess, now wishing I’d mentioned this earlier. “He’s dropping by to the see the children. I know I should have said something sooner but-”

“So, what does that mean?” Luke asks quietly. “Are you going to try and get things back on track with him?”

It was the question I’d been asking myself all of last night and all of today; if you’d have asked me yesterday, I would have said yes but, now… I stop, taking Luke’s arm and turning him to face me. “No, I’m not.”

For a moment, Luke looks hopeful but then it’s gone as he asks, “Do you want to put things on hold between us while you sort things out with Mike.”

“I don’t want that, either,” I assure him. “I meant it when I said I’d had fun tonight; I want to see where this goes.”

“Are you sure because I don’t want to get in the way of anything-”

I squeeze his hands, trying to reassure him, to make him see that I mean what I say. “I’m sure.”

He smiles as all the tension of the last few minutes disappears. “Good.” He takes my hand, interlocking our fingers as we walk the rest of the way home in silence.

As we reach the gate, I notice a light coming from the living room and groan inwardly; Mum clearly wants the low-down on my date.

“Well, this is me,” I announce, turning to face him.

Pointing down the street, he says, “My car’s just down there.” Turning back to me, he shuffles his feet.
